Also known as Morella pensylvanica, northern bayberry is a valuable native shrub of variable proportions and appearance depending on soil type, moisture, and exposure. Tolerant of challenging gowing conditions including sand dunes and other areas subject to salt spray. Foliage is pleasantly aromatic and usually deciduous. Female plants produce highly aromatic, small, waxy berries relished by many species of birds (and candlemakers). As with all dioecious plants grown from seed these be male (= no fruit) or female.
